Dichelostemma capitatum is also known as Blue Dicks.

Dichelostemma is a group of plants found in North America. They are very similar to plants in the genus Brodiaea. Some people even think they should be part of that group. These plants are part of the asparagus family.

Discovering Dichelostemma Plants

These interesting plants grow from special underground stems called corms. Corms are like bulbs and help the plant survive year after year. From these corms, a tall stem grows with many flowers. The flowers are shaped like bells or tubes. After the flowers bloom, they produce small capsules. These capsules hold tiny black seeds.

The name Dichelostemma comes from ancient Greek words. It means "toothed crown." This name describes the special parts inside the flower called stamen appendages. They look a bit like tiny teeth or a crown.

Where Do Dichelostemma Plants Grow?

Dichelostemma plants are native to North America. You can find them mostly in northern California. But they also grow as far east as New Mexico. To the north, they reach British Columbia in Canada. And to the south, they can be found in northwestern Mexico.

Different Kinds of Dichelostemma

There are several types of Dichelostemma plants. Each one has its own unique features. Here are some of the well-known species:

Gardeners have also created special types of Dichelostemma. One popular one is 'Pink Diamond'. This plant is likely a mix of D. ida-maia and D. congestum.
