Didier Guillaume (French: [didje ɡijom]; born May 11, 1959 – died January 17, 2025) was a French politician. He held important roles in government. He was the Minister of State of Monaco for a short time from 2024 until his death in 2025. Before that, he served as the Minister of Agriculture and Food in France from 2018 to 2020.

Didier Guillaume was a member of the Socialist Party until 2018. He was also the President of the General Council of Drôme from 2004 to 2015. He served as a Senator for Drôme from 2008 to 2018. From 2014 to 2018, he led the Socialist group in the Senate.

Didier Guillaume's Political Journey

Starting His Career

Didier Guillaume began his political career as the Mayor of Bourg-de-Péage. He held this position from 1995. In 2004, he was elected President of the General Council of Drôme. After this, he stepped down as Mayor of Bourg-de-Péage. He had represented the canton of Bourg-de-Péage in the Drôme General Council from 1998 to 2015.

Serving as a Senator

In 2008, Guillaume was elected to the Senate, which is part of the French Parliament. He became the First Vice President of the Senate in 2011. He held this role until 2014.

In 2014, he became the leader of the Socialist group in the Senate. This made him the Leader of the Opposition because another political group had won the majority.

He left his role as President of the Drôme General Council in 2015. This happened after a different political party won the local elections. In 2018, Patrick Kanner took over as the leader of the Socialist group in the Senate. Guillaume also helped Manuel Valls with his campaign for the 2017 presidential election.

Becoming Minister of Agriculture

From 2018 to 2020, Didier Guillaume served as the Minister of Agriculture and Food for France. He took over from Stéphane Travert. When he started, he promised to make decisions that were fair and not influenced by big industry groups.

He had planned to run for Mayor of Biarritz in 2020. However, he later decided not to run for the position.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Guillaume asked people who were not working to help farmers. Many foreign workers who usually helped with farming were not able to come. About 50,000 people offered to help. After his time as Minister, Julien Denormandie took over his role. Didier Guillaume then retired from politics.

Top Role in Monaco

On June 10, 2024, it was announced that Didier Guillaume would become the next Minister of State of Monaco. This is a very important position in Monaco's government. He took office on September 2, 2024, replacing Pierre Dartout. His term was planned for four years.

Personal Life and Legacy

Didier Guillaume was born in Drôme, France. His father was a sheep farmer.

He married Béatrice Frecenon-Guillaume on December 21, 2024, in Monaco.
