Diego Fernández de Córdoba y Arellano, 1st Marquis of Comares, (1463 – Oran, now in Algeria, 1518), was an important Spanish nobleman and military leader. He became the first Marquis of Comares in 1512. He served as Governor of Oran and Mazalquivir in North Africa twice. He was also the first Viceroy of Navarre.

Early Life and Family
Diego Fernández de Córdoba was born in 1463. His father was Martín Fernández de Córdoba y de Sotomayor. His mother was Leonor de Arellano y Fernandez de Cordoba.
He had a very famous uncle, Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba. His uncle was a well-known army commander. Diego married Juana Pacheco y Portocarrero around 1480. Her father was Juan Pacheco, the first Duke of Escalona.
Military Achievements
Diego played a key role in several important military events. These events helped expand the Spanish kingdoms.
Conquest of Granada
In 1482, he helped capture the fortress of Alhama de Granada. This fortress belonged to the Moorish Kingdom of Granada. In 1483, he helped defend Lucena from attacks. The attacks were led by King Boabdil of Granada. Lucena was a town in the province of Cordoba. It was part of the Kingdom of Castile.
North African Campaigns
After the Kingdom of Granada was conquered in 1492, Diego continued his military service. In 1501, he helped stop a revolt by the moriscos. This happened in the Sierra de los Filabres area. He helped conquer the village of Velefique.
In 1505, he led troops to conquer Mazalquivir. He also took part in the Spanish capture of Oran. Both of these cities are now in Algeria.
Political Roles and Challenges
Diego held important political and military positions. However, he also faced some challenges.
Protests in Córdoba
In 1506, Diego was involved in protests in Cordoba. These protests were against an official who was seen as unfair. During these events, there were also riots. People freed prisoners from the Córdoba prison.
Because of his part in these protests, Diego lost his job as Governor in Oran and Mazalquivir. Some of his family's castles were also destroyed.
After these events, Diego was sent to Pamplona. Pamplona is the capital of the Kingdom of Navarre. His mission was to stop troops loyal to John III of Albret. These troops were trying to fight off the Castilian-Aragonese invasion. This invasion happened in 1512.
Diego successfully completed this military mission. As a reward, he was given the title of Marquis de Comares in 1512. He also became the first Viceroy of Navarre. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a region in the name of the king.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1516, Diego was appointed to North Africa again. He became the Spanish Governor of Oran and Mazalquivir once more. He served in this role until he died in Oran in 1518.
His only son was Luis Fernández de Córdoba y Pacheco, 2nd Marquis of Comares. Luis was born in 1482 and died in 1564. He took over as Governor of Oran after his father.
