Diego Martínez Barrio's Life Story
Diego Martínez Barrio was born in the city of Seville, Spain. He started his political journey as a member of the Radical Republican Party. He even became a minister in the government led by Alejandro Lerroux. However, he later disagreed with Lerroux's ideas and decided to leave the party.
Forming a New Party
After leaving his old party, Martínez Barrio decided to create his own. He founded and led a new group called the Republican Union. This new party then joined a larger group of political parties known as the Spanish Popular Front. In 1936, the Popular Front won the elections, and Martínez Barrio was elected to the government. He became the speaker, or president, of the Cortes, which is like the Spanish Parliament.
Trying to Prevent War
In July 1936, Spain was on the brink of a big conflict, the Spanish Civil War. The Prime Minister at the time, Santiago Casares Quiroga, resigned. Diego Martínez Barrio was then asked to become Prime Minister on 19 July 1936. He really wanted to stop the war from happening. He tried to form a government that would avoid fighting. He even tried to talk to one of the military leaders, General Emilio Mola, to prevent the war.
However, his efforts were not successful. He was Prime Minister for only a few hours. He resigned later that same morning. José Giral then took over as Prime Minister.
Life in Exile
After the Spanish Civil War ended in 1939, Francisco Franco came to power. Many politicians who supported the Republic had to leave Spain. Martínez Barrio was one of them. He first went to France and then moved to Mexico.
In 1945, while in Mexico, he was chosen to be the president of the Spanish Republic's government in exile. This was a government formed by those who had left Spain after the war. He held this important role until 1962. Martínez Barrio eventually returned to Paris, France, where he passed away.
In the year 2000, his remains were brought back to his hometown of Seville, Spain.
