Diego Sarmiento de Valladares (born in 1615, died in 1695) was an important Spanish bishop. He is best known for being the Grand Inquisitor of Spain for many years, from 1669 until his death.

The Life of Diego Sarmiento de Valladares

Diego Sarmiento de Valladares was born in a city called Vigo in Spain in 1615. His parents were Luis Sarmiento and Inés de Arines Romay. He was also related to Jose Sarmiento de Valladares, who became a very important leader in New Spain (which is now Mexico).

Becoming a Church Leader

Diego became a priest on October 4, 1667. Soon after, in January 1668, he was chosen to be the Bishop of Oviedo. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. Later that same year, he became the Bishop of Plasencia.

Important Roles in Spain

Charles II of Spain also gave him another big job. He became the president of the Council of Castile. This council was a very important group that helped the king rule Spain. He held this job until 1669.

In 1669, Diego Sarmiento de Valladares became the Grand Inquisitor of Spain. This was a powerful position within the Spanish Inquisition. The Grand Inquisitor was the main leader of a special court that made sure people followed the rules of the Catholic Church. He kept this important role until he died.

One of the most notable events he oversaw was a large auto-da-fé held in 1680. An auto-da-fé was a public ceremony where the Spanish Inquisition announced its judgments. This particular event took place in the Plaza Mayor, Madrid, a famous square in Madrid.

Diego Sarmiento de Valladares died in Madrid on January 29, 1695.
