Diego de Almagro is a city and a commune in Chile. It is located in the Chañaral Province of the Atacama Region. The commune covers a large area of about 18,663.8 square kilometers. The city is named after Diego de Almagro, a famous Spanish explorer. Before 1977, the city was known as Pueblo Hundido, which means "Sunk Town".

About the People
Population Numbers
In 2002, a special count of people called a census was done. This census showed that Diego de Almagro had 18,589 people living there. Out of these, 10,031 were men and 8,558 were women.
City vs. Countryside
Most of the people, about 17,674 (or 95.1%), lived in the city areas. Only a smaller group of 915 people (4.9%) lived in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Diego de Almagro went down by about 8,926.
How the City is Run
Local Government
Diego de Almagro is managed as a commune. This means it has a special group called a municipal council. The council helps make decisions for the city. The main leader of the city is called an alcalde, who is like a mayor. People vote directly for the alcalde every four years.

National Representatives

For their area, Lautaro Carmona and Carlos Vilches were chosen. They also vote for members of the Senate, which is another part of the national government. Isabel Allende Bussi and Baldo Prokurica Prokurica represented the Atacama Region in the Senate.
