Dilham Castle, also known as Dilham Hall, is a historic building in the village of Dilham. It's located near Stalham in Norfolk, England.

What is Dilham Castle?

Dilham Castle was built a long time ago, in the 15th century. This means it was built in the 1400s. It was built by a knight named Sir Henry Inglose. He was a brave soldier who had fought in France with King Henry V.

A Fortified Home

Dilham Castle wasn't a huge, grand castle like you might imagine. Instead, it was a special kind of home called a fortified manor house. This means it was a large country house that was also built to be defended. It was made strong with thick walls.

What it Looked Like

When it was first built, Dilham Castle probably had two towers. These towers might have formed a grand entrance or gateway. It also had an outer wall. The building materials used were flint stone and brick, which were common for buildings in that area.

Dilham Castle Today

Over many years, parts of Dilham Castle have changed or disappeared. By 1904, only one of the towers and some of the original wall were still standing. The remaining tower was fixed up with newer brick and cement.

A Protected Historic Site

Today, the remains of Dilham Castle are located on Hall Farm. They are considered very important historical structures. Because of this, they are protected by law as a grade II listed building and a scheduled monument. This means they are recognized for their special historical or architectural importance.

Looking After the Castle

In 2009, experts from English Heritage (a group that looks after historic places) said that the site was in "poor" condition. This was because plants and trees were growing on the tower and causing damage. It's important to care for these old buildings so they can last for many more years!
