Stalham is a small and friendly market town in the English county of Norfolk. It sits right on the River Ant, which is part of the beautiful Norfolk Broads area. Stalham is about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Norwich.

In 2011, about 3,149 people lived in Stalham. The town's name probably means "fish pool homestead" or "village." This suggests it was a place with water where people lived and perhaps fished a long time ago.

Stalham's Past and Growth

Stalham used to have its own railway station. This station helped people travel and move goods. However, it closed down in 1959. Now, the closest train station is Worstead.

During the 1960s, Stalham's economy faced some challenges. Fewer people were needed for farming because new machines did a lot of the work. But things started to change in the 1970s. More homes were built, and people began to move to Stalham. Many of these new residents worked in other towns but chose to live in Stalham.

Things to See in Stalham

One of the cool places to visit in Stalham is The Museum of the Broads. This museum moved to Stalham in 2000. It is located right by the water at Stalham Staithe. The museum's goal is to share the exciting history of the Broads with everyone. It is open to visitors during the summer months.

In 2002, a large supermarket was built in Stalham. Some people worried that this new store would make it hard for the smaller shops on the High Street to survive. But even with the supermarket, Stalham's High Street still has many different independent shops. This means you can find unique things there!

How Stalham is Governed

Stalham is part of a larger area called the Stalham and Sutton electoral ward. An electoral ward is like a local voting area. In 2011, about 4,312 people lived in this ward. This area helps decide who represents the town in local government.
