History of Dillard
Early Settlers
The Dillard family first came to this area around 1823. John Dillard and his son, James Dillard, were among the first to settle here. James bought a large piece of land, about 1,000 acres (4.0 km²).
John Dillard was a soldier in the American Revolution. He fought as a lieutenant in the Virginia Militia. He took part in important battles like the Battle of Guilford Court House. Before moving to Georgia, both John and James lived in North Carolina.
The Dillard House
Today, Dillard is famous for the Dillard House. This is a well-known inn, restaurant, and conference center. It serves delicious traditional Southern food. Many people visit to enjoy the food and the peaceful mountain setting.
Becoming a Town
The area officially became the "Town of Dillard" in 1906. This happened when the Georgia General Assembly (the state's law-making body) approved it.
