Dimeresia is a special group of plants with only one species in it. This single species is called Dimeresia howellii. It is also known by its common name, doublet. This tiny plant belongs to the sunflower family, which includes many well-known flowers.
Where Does the Doublet Plant Grow?
This rare plant is found only in a specific area of the western United States. This means it is endemic to that region. You can find it in parts of northeastern California, southeastern Oregon, southwestern Idaho, and northwestern Nevada.
The doublet plant prefers to grow in dry, rocky soils that come from volcanoes. It is mostly found on the Modoc Plateau, which is a large flat area formed by ancient volcanoes. It grows at high elevations, usually between 1,500 and 2,400 meters (about 4,900 to 7,900 feet) above sea level.
What Does the Doublet Plant Look Like?
Dimeresia howellii is a very small plant. It is an annual, meaning it completes its whole life cycle in just one year. It rarely grows taller or wider than 4 centimeters (about 1.5 inches).
This tiny plant forms a small clump on the ground. It has several oval-shaped leaves. The base of the plant feels a bit like a spiderweb, while the upper parts are sticky.
The plant's flowers are also very tiny. They are bell-shaped and can be white or purple. Each flower is only a few millimeters long. You can usually see these tiny flowers blooming from May to August.
