Demetris Christofias, also known as Dimitris Christofias (Greek: Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας), was an important Cypriot politician. He was born on August 29, 1946, and passed away on June 21, 2019. He served as the sixth President of Cyprus from 2008 to 2013.
Christofias was also the leader, or General Secretary, of a political party called AKEL. This party is known for its communist ideas. He was the first and only head of state in Cyprus and the European Union to come from a communist party.
Becoming President
Demetris Christofias became President after winning the 2008 Cypriot presidential elections. He won in the second round of voting. During his election campaign, he made some big promises to the people of Cyprus.
Key Goals as President
One of his main goals was to restart talks with Turkish Cypriots. These talks aimed to find a solution to the Cyprus dispute. This dispute is about how the island of Cyprus is divided. Christofias hoped to reunify the island, bringing both parts together again.
He also supported the idea of closing the British military bases on Cyprus. These bases are areas on the island that are controlled by the United Kingdom.
Other Roles
Before becoming President, Christofias held other important positions. He was the President of the House of Representatives (Cyprus) from 2001 to 2008. This is like being the speaker of the country's parliament. He was also the General Secretary of the AKEL party for many years, from 1988 to 2009.
Later Life
On May 20, 2019, Christofias became ill and was taken to a hospital in Nicosia. He had a serious breathing infection. Sadly, he died about a month later, on June 21, 2019, from respiratory failure. He was 72 years old.
