Disabled skiing at the 1984 Winter Olympics facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Disabled skiing made its first appearance as an Olympic demonstration sport at the 1984 Winter Olympics. This was a special chance to show off the skills of disabled skiers to a wider audience. The event featured alpine giant slalom races for men.

Skiers competed in four different categories based on their physical abilities. Even though medals were given out, these events were just for demonstration. This meant the medals did not count towards the official country medal totals for the Olympics. These exciting races happened alongside the main 1984 Winter Paralympics events in Innsbruck. Disabled skiing was also a demonstration sport at the 1988 Winter Olympics. In 1984, 29 disabled skiers from 11 different countries took part.
