Playing Career
Ditmar Jakobs played in many football games during his career. From 1971 to 1990, he played a total of 493 matches for different clubs. These clubs included Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, Tennis Borussia Berlin, and MSV Duisburg.
His most successful time was with Hamburger SV. With this team, he won the DFB-Pokal (a big German cup) in 1987. He also helped Hamburger SV become German champions two times, in 1982 and 1983. The biggest win for him and his team was the European Cup in 1983. This is one of the most important club football trophies in Europe!
International Games
Ditmar Jakobs also played for the West Germany national team. He represented his country in 20 matches between 1980 and 1986. He was part of the team that reached the final of the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. They finished as the runner-up, which is still a great achievement!
Career-Ending Accident
Sadly, Ditmar Jakobs' football career ended suddenly on September 20, 1989. This happened during a game between Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen.
During the match, an opposing player shot the ball over the Hamburger SV goalkeeper. Ditmar Jakobs quickly tried to stop the ball from going into the net. He dove feet-first into the goal. However, he accidentally fell into some hooks that were used to hold the goal in place. At that time, rules didn't always require these hooks to be buried safely underground.
He was stuck for a while, and the hook caused a serious injury to his back. Because of this accident, he had to stop playing football. He was very lucky, as the injury could have been much worse.
Life After Football
After his football career, Ditmar Jakobs started a new job. He became an insurance broker in Norderstedt, a town near Hamburg. An insurance broker helps people find the right insurance plans.
