Dmitri the Astronaut is a fun children's book from 1996. It was written and drawn by Jon Agee. The story is about an astronaut named Dmitri. He comes back to Earth after spending a long time on the Moon. But when he arrives, he finds that nobody seems to remember who he is!
The Story of Dmitri
The book begins with Dmitri, an American astronaut. He has spent two and a half years living on the Moon. When it's time to come home, his spaceship lands in the Atlantic Ocean. This kind of landing is called a splashdown.
A large cruise ship named S.S. Knickerbocker finds Dmitri. They pick him up, and he sails to New York City. But as soon as he gets there, Dmitri notices something strange. No one seems to know who he is!
Dmitri decides to visit the Museum of Intergalactic Exploration. He hopes someone there will recognize him. However, the museum's Moon exhibit is old and messy. This makes Dmitri feel very sad and disappointed.
Feeling discouraged, Dmitri throws his special collection of Moon rocks into a trash can. This happens while he is walking in Central Park. What Dmitri doesn't know is that his friend Lulu is hiding inside the bag of rocks! Lulu is a small, pink creature he found on the Moon.
Luckily, a famous scientist finds Lulu. His name is Dr. Geoffrey W. Beaton, and he has won a Nobel Prize. Dr. Beaton takes Lulu to the Academy of Science.
The next day, Dmitri goes to the Academy. He finds Lulu there! The little creature has drawn pictures all over the walls. These drawings show Dmitri wearing his space suit.
Finally, Dr. Beaton realizes who Dmitri is. Everyone then celebrates Dmitri and Lulu as heroes! They are both recognized for their amazing journey.
