Dmytro Chyhrynskyi was born in Iziaslav, Ukraine. He started his football journey in the youth system of UFK Lviv. When he was 14 years old, he moved to Donetsk to continue his training at the Shakhtar Donetsk academy. This is where he developed his skills as a football player.
Club Career Highlights
Starting at Shakhtar Donetsk

Dmytro made his first professional appearance in Ukraine's top league, the Vyshcha Liha, in 2004. He was only 17 years old at the time. In 2005, he was loaned to another Ukrainian club, Metalurh Zaporizhzhia. This gave him more chances to play regularly in top-level matches.
After his loan, Dmytro returned to Shakhtar Donetsk. He quickly became a strong and reliable defender for the team. He even got to play in the UEFA Champions League for the first time against Barcelona in 2004. By the 2006–07 season, when he was just 20, he became a regular starter. He even captained Shakhtar in the Ukrainian Cup final when the usual captain was absent.
In the 2007–08 season, Dmytro became the team's vice-captain. He was named the best player in the Ukrainian Cup Final, where Shakhtar won 2–0 against their rivals, Dynamo Kyiv. That same season, he also helped Shakhtar win the Vyshcha Liha championship.
European Success with Shakhtar
At the start of the 2008–09 season, Dmytro helped Shakhtar win the Ukrainian Super Cup. He also played in the Champions League group stage. Although Shakhtar finished third in their group, they continued their European journey in the UEFA Cup.
Dmytro played a key role as Shakhtar reached the quarter-finals, beating teams like Marseille. They then made it to the semi-finals, where they faced their Ukrainian rivals, Dynamo Kyiv. Shakhtar won and advanced to the 2009 UEFA Cup Final against Werder Bremen. Dmytro and his team won the trophy 2–1 after extra time, marking a big achievement for the club.
Time at Barcelona
On 26 August 2009, Dmytro made a big move to Barcelona in Spain. The transfer cost around €25 million. He was the first Ukrainian player ever to join Barcelona. People expected him to show off his skills with the ball and his strong defending.
Dmytro played his first game for Barcelona on 12 September 2009 in La Liga, Spain's top league. He played the full 90 minutes in a 2–0 victory against Getafe. Even though Barcelona won the league title that season, Dmytro did not play very often. Despite this, the team's manager, Pep Guardiola, wanted him to stay.
Returning to Shakhtar Donetsk
On 6 July 2010, Dmytro signed a five-year deal to go back to Shakhtar Donetsk. Shakhtar paid €15 million for him, making a profit of €10 million from his earlier sale. Before the World Cup, Dmytro was part of the Ukraine under-21 team. They finished as runners-up in the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Dmytro played very well in that tournament and was chosen as one of the best players in the "Team of the Tournament" by UEFA.
Even though he was supposed to play in the World Cup, Dmytro got injured during the end of the under-21 competition. This injury meant he could not play in the World Cup. After he recovered, Dmytro became a regular starter for the Ukraine national team in the qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2008.
