Kids Encyclopedia Facts

World Ranking points are like a score for countries in certain sports. These points show how well a country's team performs in big international competitions. Think of it like a scoreboard for nations! The points are given based on where a team finishes in tournaments such as World Cup qualifiers, the World Cup, and the World Invitational. There are separate ranking systems for men's, women's, and mixed teams.

How Teams Get Points

Teams earn points based on their final spot in major international tournaments. These events include the World Cup, its qualifying rounds, and the World Invitational. Each type of team – men's, women's, and mixed – has its own separate ranking list.

Understanding the Rankings

The rankings for national teams are based on how they have performed over the past eight years. Every year, the oldest year of results is removed, and the newest year's results are added. This means the rankings always reflect recent performance.

Here is how points are usually given for top places in different tournaments:

World Cup Points

  • 1st place: 240 points
  • 2nd place: 220 points
  • Last place: 120 points

World Cup Qualifiers Points

  • 1st place: 120 points
  • 2nd place: 110 points
  • Last place: 20 points

World Invitational Points

  • 1st place: 110 points
  • 2nd place: 100 points
  • Last place: 10 points

For places after 2nd, the points are spread out fairly. This helps make sure that tournaments with different numbers of teams are still compared properly. For example, getting 3rd place out of 10 teams is seen as a bigger achievement than getting 3rd place out of only 6 teams. A special calculation is used to figure out the exact points for each spot after 2nd place.
