Dogri (pronounced DOH-gree) is a language spoken by about two million people. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan family, which is a large group of languages spoken mainly in India and nearby countries.

Even though it was once thought to be a dialect (a different version) of Punjabi, Dogri is now seen as its own language. It's part of a group called the Western Pahari languages.

Where Dogri is Spoken

Most Dogri speakers live in the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir in India. You can also find Dogri speakers in parts of Pakistan, Himachal Pradesh, and the northern areas of Punjab in India.

People who speak Dogri are called Dogras. The area where Dogri is spoken is known as Duggar. In some parts of Pakistan, like Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, the language is often called Pahari.

Interesting Facts About Dogri

Dogri has a special feature that is unusual for an Indo-European language: it uses tones. This means the meaning of a word can change depending on the pitch of your voice when you say it. This is a trait it shares with other Western Pahari languages and Punjabi.

Dogri can be written using different scripts. The main ones are Devanagari (which is used for Hindi), Takri (an older script), and a Perso-Arabic script (similar to what's used for Urdu).
