Life with Thomas Johnson
Starting a Family
From 1825, Dolly lived with Thomas Johnson (1801–1867). He was a former convict. They had several children together. They married six years later, in October 1831.
A Brave Act
Earlier in 1831, Dolly showed great bravery. She successfully defended her home and children. This happened when Aboriginal people attacked while Johnson was away. The government rewarded her for her courage. She received 20 acres (8.1 ha) of land at Perth. She then moved there with Johnson and her children.
Family Life and Moving On
By 1841, Dolly Dalrymple had seven children. The government helped her bring her mother, Woretemoeteyenner, to live with her. Her mother was living at Wybalenna, on Flinders Island, at the time.
In 1845, the entire family moved to the Mersey region. Thomas Johnson became very successful and wealthy. He bought 500 acres (200 ha) of land in the area now known as Latrobe. There, he built Sherwood Hall. Dolly Dalrymple often managed his properties when he was away.
