Plot Summary
A New Rescue and a Big Decision
Three years have passed since Winter the dolphin was saved. The team at Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) rescues another dolphin. This dolphin is badly sunburned and found on a beach. A little girl names her Mandy.
Sawyer, who is now fourteen, gets an amazing chance. He could win a scholarship to a special program called SEA Semester. This program involves three months at sea. Students research marine mammals. Sawyer impresses Dr. Miguel Arroyo, his cousin Kyle's advisor. This happens when famous surfer Bethany Hamilton swims with Sawyer and Winter. Sawyer feels unsure about leaving Winter to go on this trip.
Winter's Loneliness and New Challenges
Winter starts to show signs of being lonely and stressed. This is especially true after her older dolphin friend, Panama, passes away. One morning, Rufus, a pelican, acts strangely. Sawyer and Hazel follow him and find a sea turtle caught in fishing line. They rescue the turtle and name her Mavis. Rufus becomes very attached to Mavis. He even watches her during a special scan at the hospital.
A government inspector named George Hatton visits the aquarium. He says Winter must have a new dolphin companion within 30 days. If not, she will have to move to another marine park. Winter's behavior becomes difficult. She even acts aggressively when Sawyer tries to help her with a new tail. Because of this, Dr. Clay tells Sawyer he cannot swim with Winter for a while. Winter spends weeks alone. Sawyer secretly lets a new volunteer, Susie, and her grandfather visit Winter. Hazel, who likes Sawyer, feels a little jealous.
Mandy's Release and a New Hope
Sawyer and Hazel hope Mandy, the rescued dolphin, can be Winter's new friend. Mandy gets better quickly at CMA. Dr. Clay thinks about releasing her back into the ocean. Hazel is worried about this. Lorraine, Sawyer's mom, tells Hazel that animals should not stay in a hospital longer than needed. She encourages Hazel to talk to her father, Clay. Hazel bravely asks Clay to see Mandy's medical records, and he agrees.
Clay, Sawyer, and Hazel test Mandy to see if she is ready for release. They give her three live fish, and she catches them easily. They sadly decide she must be released. Clay puts Hazel in charge of Mandy's release.
Sawyer and Hazel break the rules and swim with Winter. Winter seems much happier. Clay finds them but says it does not matter. George, the inspector, has ordered Winter to be moved to a marine park in Texas. Meanwhile, Sawyer wins the scholarship for the SEA Semester program. His family and friends throw him a party. Even though he is happy, he still cannot decide if he should go. Dr. McCarthy shows Sawyer an old watch. It needs to be tapped to keep ticking. He tells Sawyer to "shake it up" and try new things in life.
During the party, Clay learns that another young female dolphin has been rescued. She is too young to hunt on her own and cannot go back to the wild. This gives them new hope for Winter. They name this new dolphin "Hope". At the same time, Mavis the sea turtle is released, and Rufus the pelican follows her out to sea.
Winter and Hope's Friendship
George gives Clay more time to keep Winter at CMA. The team tries to introduce Hope to Winter. But Hope gets scared and swims very fast around the pool. The staff quickly separates them. They realize Hope sensed that Winter did not have a tail and moved differently. Sawyer thinks a new prosthetic tail for Winter might help. Everyone agrees to try it.
For her second meeting with Hope, Winter wears a new tail designed by Dr. McCarthy. A large crowd, including George, watches. Finally, the two dolphins accept each other! Everyone is very happy that Winter can stay at CMA now that she has a companion.
With Winter's future settled, Sawyer decides to go to the SEA Semester program. He promises Winter he will be back. Hazel says goodbye to him by releasing balloons and holding a sign. Sawyer sends her a text message saying, "Thanks, Hazel. You're the best!" Hazel blushes and smiles. Rufus the pelican returns to the aquarium. As Sawyer's mom drives away, Hazel quietly says she will miss Sawyer a lot.
At the end of the movie, you can see real-life videos. These show Mandy's actual release, Hope's rescue, Mavis the sea turtle being released, Winter wearing her new prosthetic tail, and people with missing limbs interacting with Winter.
