Donald John Wright is an American doctor, government official, and diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in another country. He served as the United States Ambassador to Tanzania from 2020 to 2023.
Before becoming an ambassador, Dr. Wright worked in important health roles for the U.S. government. For a short time in 2017, he was the Acting United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. This means he was temporarily in charge of the main government department that protects the health of all Americans. He was chosen for this role by President Donald Trump.
Donald Wright's Education
Donald Wright studied at several universities to become a doctor and public health expert. He earned his first degree from Texas Tech University. Then, he went to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston to get his medical degree.
After medical school, he completed special training in family medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He also has a Master of Public Health degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. This degree focuses on improving health for large groups of people.
Donald Wright's Career
After finishing his medical training, Dr. Wright worked as a doctor for 15 years. He had his own practice where he saw patients and also worked as a consultant in Central Texas.
From 2003 to 2007, he worked for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA is a government agency that makes sure workplaces are safe and healthy for employees. He was the Director of their Office of Occupational Medicine.
Dr. Wright started working at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2007. HHS is the main U.S. government agency for health and human services. He held several important positions there. He helped lead efforts to improve healthcare quality and prevent diseases.
In October 2019, Dr. Wright was chosen to be the next United States Ambassador to Tanzania. To become an ambassador, he had to be approved by the U.S. Senate. He spoke to the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and was approved in January 2020. The full Senate then confirmed him in February 2020. He officially started his role in Tanzania in August 2020.
