Donald Wayne Washington was born on January 29, 1955. He is an American lawyer who has held important roles in the U.S. government. From 2019 to 2021, he was the 11th director of the United States Marshals Service. Before that, he worked as a United States Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana from 2001 to 2010.
Early Life and Military Service
Donald Washington was born in Sulphur Springs, Texas. In 1977, he graduated from the United States Military Academy. He earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in engineering.
After college, he joined the United States Army as an officer. He served in the U.S. and South Korea until 1982. Later, he served in the United States Army Reserve in Texas until 1986. He retired from the Army as a captain.
Career Highlights
In 1982, Donald Washington started working as an engineer for an oil company called Conoco Inc. He also began studying for a master's degree in engineering.
Later, he decided to become a lawyer. He went to the South Texas College of Law in 1986. He earned his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1989. After becoming a lawyer, he worked for companies and in private law firms.
In 2001, President George W. Bush chose him to be the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana. In this role, he represented the U.S. government in legal cases. He served in this position until 2010.
In 2018, President Donald Trump nominated Donald Washington for a new job. He was chosen to lead the United States Marshals Service. This is a very old and important law enforcement agency. The Senate approved his nomination in March 2019. He was sworn in as the 11th director of the Marshals Service shortly after. He held this role until September 2021.
