Donald Williams: Early Basketball Days
Donald Williams grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. He played high school basketball at Garner High School. His coach there was Eddie Gray.
After high school, Williams went on to play for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He played under the famous coach Dean Smith. Williams was a 6-foot-3-inch tall player. He could play as a point guard or a shooting guard.
Winning the NCAA Championship
Williams became a college basketball star in 1993. That year, his team, the North Carolina Tar Heels, won the NCAA National Championship. This is a huge college basketball tournament.
In the final game, North Carolina played against the University of Michigan. Williams scored 25 points in that game. He made five of his seven shots from the 3-point line. Because of his excellent play, he received the NCAA basketball tournament Most Outstanding Player Award for the tournament.
Playing Pro Basketball Around the World
After college, Donald Williams started his professional basketball career. He played for many teams in different countries. He played in places like Cyprus, Germany, and France. He also played in Greece, Austria, and the Philippines.
In 1998, Williams won a championship in the Philippines. He was playing for a team called Formula Shell. Their coach was Perry Ronquillo. Williams also played in Sweden, Finland, and the Dominican Republic. His career showed how basketball is played all over the globe.
Coaching and Helping Young Players
Today, Donald Williams is a basketball coach. He is the head coach for the girls' basketball team at Wakefield High School. He also started his own program called the Donald Williams Basketball Academy. This academy helps young players learn and improve their skills.
Williams has been very successful as a coach. He was named coach of the year in both the 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 seasons. Under his coaching, the Wakefield ladies' basketball team did very well. In the 2017–2018 season, they reached the final two teams in their conference. The next year, in the 2018–2019 season, they won the state championship! They finished that season without losing a single game.
