Doneil Henry's Soccer Journey
Early Years and Youth Clubs
Doneil Henry's parents moved to Canada from Jamaica. He started playing soccer when he was 10 years old. He played for youth teams like Brampton Youth Soccer Club and North Mississauga SC.
Playing for Toronto FC
Henry joined the TFC Academy in November 2008. He was the captain of the team for two seasons in the Canadian Soccer League.
He played his first game for Toronto FC in 2010. This was in a Canadian Championship match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. He also played in a CONCACAF Champions League qualifying game. On August 26, 2010, he made history by becoming the first player from the TFC Academy to sign with the main team.
In 2012, Henry scored his first goal for Toronto FC. It was in a game against Real Salt Lake. The club then signed him to a new, longer contract. He also played in several CONCACAF Champions League matches.
In 2013, Henry scored his second goal for Toronto FC. This goal helped his team win against Montreal Impact in the Canadian Championship. Before the 2014 season, he trained with Premier League club West Ham United. In May 2014, he scored a winning goal in the last minutes of a game against Columbus Crew.
Moving to Apollon Limassol
In April 2014, Henry was sold to Apollon Limassol, a team in Cyprus. Toronto FC hoped to get him back on loan for the 2015 season.
Time with West Ham United
Henry joined West Ham United in England on January 3, 2015. He had trained with them before. He played his first game for West Ham in August 2015 in a Europa League qualifying match. This was his only game for the club. He left West Ham in December 2017.
Loans to Blackburn Rovers
West Ham loaned Henry to Blackburn Rovers in March 2015. He played his first game for them on the same day. His manager called his performance "magnificent." In his second game, he helped set up a goal that led to a win. However, he got a hamstring injury in his third game, which ended his season early. He returned to Blackburn on loan again in November 2015.
Loan to AC Horsens
In August 2016, Henry was loaned to AC Horsens, a club in Denmark. He started his first game for Horsens in October, and his team won 1–0. Sadly, in his second start, he suffered a serious knee injury (ACL tear). This injury ended his season, and he went back to West Ham in January 2017.
Playing for Vancouver Whitecaps FC
On December 22, 2017, Henry signed with Vancouver Whitecaps FC. To help him get back to full fitness, he was loaned to Ottawa Fury in April 2018. He played three games for Ottawa, and his team did not let in any goals in those matches. He returned to Vancouver in May 2018 and made his Whitecaps debut in June. He scored his first goal for Vancouver in March 2019 against Minnesota United.
Playing in South Korea
In November 2019, Henry moved to South Korea to play for Suwon Samsung Bluewings. He played his first game for them in the AFC Champions League in February 2020. He scored his first goal for the club in October, helping his team win 2-1.
Back in Major League Soccer
In February 2022, Henry returned to the MLS, signing with Los Angeles FC. He made his debut for LAFC in a 3–0 win in February. After playing in six matches, he left the club in July 2022.
He then returned to his first club, Toronto FC, in July 2022. He played seven games for them before his contract ended at the end of the 2022 season. In December 2022, Minnesota United signed him for the 2023 season.
Playing for HFX Wanderers
In July 2023, Henry signed with the HFX Wanderers FC in the Canadian Premier League. He made his debut for the Wanderers in July, helping them win 1-0.
Doneil Henry's International Career
Youth National Teams
Henry played three matches for the Canada U-20 men's national soccer team. He was also chosen for the Canada U23 team in 2012. He scored a goal in a 2–0 victory against the United States U23 team.
Senior National Team

Henry played his first game for Canada's senior team on August 15, 2012. This was in a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago. Canada won the game 2–0. In December 2012, he was named the Canadian U-20 Player of the Year.
He was part of Canada's squad for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He also played in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. On September 7, 2019, he scored his first goal for Canada against Cuba in a CONCACAF Nations League match. He was also part of the team for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Henry was expected to play for Canada in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, he got a calf injury during a warm-up game in November 2022. This injury unfortunately meant he could not join the final World Cup squad.
Management Career
In December 2021, Henry became a co-owner of a new soccer club called Simcoe County Rovers FC. In June 2024, he was named the Sporting Director for the club. He also joined the team's coaching staff. For the 2025 season, he became the team's head coach.
