The Story of Doo Town
Doo Town is about 79 kilometers southeast of Hobart. It started in the 1830s as a place where people worked with timber. Over time, it became a small community of holiday shacks.
How the "Doo" Names Began
The fun tradition of "Doo" names began in 1935. A Hobart architect named Eric Round put a sign on his weekend shack. It read Doo I 99. His neighbor, Charles Gibson, thought it was funny and put up a sign saying Doo Me. Then, Bill Eldrige added Doo Us to his shack. Eric Round later changed his shack's name to Xanadoo.
This clever idea quickly became popular. Soon, most of the homes in the village had a name that included "Doo".
Unique House Names
The houses in Doo Town have many creative names. Some examples include Doo Little, Doo Me, and Doo Us. It's a fun game to spot all the different "Doo" names as you walk around.
Missing "Doo" Names
Even with all the creative names, there are still some "Doo" names that haven't been used yet. For example, you won't find houses named Doo Hast, Baby Shark, or Scooby-Doo.
The One Exception
There is one house in Doo Town that doesn't follow the "Doo" naming tradition. Its sign simply reads Medhurst.
