The Dorah Pass, also called Durah Pass, is a high mountain pass. It connects a region called Badakhshan in Afghanistan with Chitral in Pakistan. This pass is very high, reaching over 14,000 feet (4,300 meters) above sea level. It crosses the mighty Hindu Kush mountains.
The Dorah Pass became very important during the war in Afghanistan in the 1980s. During this time, Soviet forces were in Afghanistan. However, they could not stop weapons and people from moving across the Dorah Pass. Many people who spoke the Munji language fled from Afghanistan. They crossed the border into Chitral, Pakistan, using this pass during the war.
The Pamir Mountains
The Pamir is a high plateau, which is like a very flat, high area of land. It is sometimes called "The roof of the world" because it is so high. The Pamir mountains connect several countries. These include Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, China, and Kashmir. A famous explorer named Marco Polo is believed to have traveled through the Pamir Mountains. He was on his way to China many centuries ago.
