The Doria's goshawk (also called Doria's hawk) is a type of raptor. Its scientific name is Megatriorchis doriae. This large bird lives in the forests of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It belongs to the Accipitridae family, which includes many hawks and eagles. Female Doria's goshawks are bigger than males, growing up to 69 centimeters long.

What Does It Look Like?

Doria's goshawk has grayish-brown feathers. Its head and upper body have black stripes. Its belly is whitish. It has a black stripe behind its eye. The bird's eyes are dark brown, its beak is blackish, and its legs are greenish-yellow.

Both male and female goshawks look similar, but females are a bit larger. Young goshawks are lighter in color, with a reddish-brown shade. This bird is quite thin for a hawk, with a strong beak, small head, and powerful legs. Its wings are smooth and curved.

Where Does It Live?

Doria's goshawk lives only in the lowland rainforests of New Guinea and Batanta Island. This bird is very hard to spot. It blends in well with its surroundings and does not draw attention to itself. Because of this, very few sightings have been recorded. For example, over seven years of watching in Papua New Guinea, the bird was seen only once!

These goshawks prefer to stay under the forest canopy, in the shade. They do not fly high in the sky. Sadly, their home is shrinking as forests are cut down.

Why Is It Important to Protect Them?

Doria's goshawk is listed as "Near Threatened" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This means it is close to becoming a threatened species in the future. It is also listed on Appendix II of CITES, which helps control trade of animals to protect them.

The main reason this bird is in danger is that its forest home is being destroyed. This directly affects the number of Doria's goshawks, which is already small and getting smaller.

What's in a Name?

The scientific name Megatriorchis doriae has an interesting meaning. "Mega-" comes from the Greek word for "big." The species name "doriae" honors an Italian naturalist named Giacomo Doria.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Not much is known about how Doria's goshawks raise their young. They build large nests made of sticks in the branches and leaves of trees.

Hunting and Food

Doria's goshawk is a very patient hunter. It can sit for hours on tree branches, high up in the forest canopy. It waits quietly for its prey to pass by. We don't know much more about what it eats or how it finds food.

What Sound Does It Make?

Doria's goshawk makes a long, sharp, hissing whistle. It uses this call when it is flying, catching food, sitting on a branch, or even when it is fighting with other birds.
