Dorian Harewood (born August 6, 1950) is an American actor. He is well-known for playing Jesse Owens in The Jesse Owens Story (1984). He also played Det. Paul Strobber on Strike Force (1981–1982) and Rev. Morgan Hamilton in 7th Heaven (1996–2003).

Dorian Harewood's Early Life

Dorian Harewood was born in Dayton, Ohio, on August 6, 1950. His parents were Emerson Macaulay and Estelle Olivia Harewood. His father worked as a high school teacher and a post office clerk. Dorian has five brothers and sisters. He studied at the Conservatory of Music and graduated in 1972.

Dorian Harewood's Acting Career

Dorian Harewood started his acting journey in musical theater. He performed in several shows on Broadway, including Two Gentlemen of Verona and Streamers. For his role in Don't Call Back, he won a Theatre World Award for being a promising new actor.

A famous actress named Bette Davis encouraged him to act in serious dramatic roles. He considers her his mentor. His first movie role was in Foster and Laurie in 1975.

Famous Roles in TV and Movies

Dorian Harewood played Simon Haley, the father of author Alex Haley, in the TV miniseries Roots: The Next Generations. He is most famous for playing the Olympic athlete Jesse Owens in The Jesse Owens Story. He also co-starred as police psychologist Paul Strobber in the TV series Strike Force.

He appeared regularly on Trauma Center. He also had a repeating role on China Beach. Some of his movie roles include Gray Lady Down (1978) and Tank (1984). He was also in Stanley Kubrick's movie Full Metal Jacket (1987). Later, he appeared in Levity and Gothika in 2003.

In 1994, he won an NAACP Image Award for his role as jazz musician Clarence "Cool Papa" Charleston in the TV show I'll Fly Away. The next year, he voiced Hank Aaron in a TV film about the baseball legend. This role earned him an Emmy Award nomination.

He also played Dr. Julian Wilkes in the TV series Viper. He had a recurring role as Rev. Morgan Hamilton in 7th Heaven. For his work on The Hoop Life, he received another NAACP Image Award nomination in 2000.

Voice Acting Work

Dorian Harewood is also a talented voice actor. He started voicing characters in cartoons in the 1980s. He was the voice of A.C. in The California Raisin Show. He also had guest roles in Batman: The Animated Series and Spider-Man. He even voiced Michael Jordan in the cartoon ProStars.

He returned to the Batman world as Jim Tate in Batman Beyond. He sometimes voiced Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He also voiced Rhodey Rhodes / War Machine in Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. He was the voice of Modo in Biker Mice from Mars (1993−96) and came back for the show's revival (2006−08).

Dorian Harewood has been in over 100 movies and TV shows. He once said he regretted being in the miniseries Beulah Land. He didn't like the script and felt embarrassed by the final show. He has stated that he only wants roles that show positive images of African-Americans.

Recently, Harewood is starring as Older Noah Calhoun in the Broadway musical The Notebook. He was nominated for a Tony Award for this role.

Dorian Harewood married actress Nancy Ann McCurry on February 14, 1979. They have two children together, a daughter named Olivia Ruth and a son named John Dorian.
