Hessy Doris Lloyd (born July 3, 1891 – died May 21, 1968) was a talented British actress. She had a long career in movies and television. You might know her from famous films like The Time Machine (1960) and The Sound of Music (1965).

Doris Lloyd's Early Life
Doris Lloyd was born in Liverpool, England. Her parents were Edward Franklin Lloyd and Hessy Jane McCappin. Interestingly, her grandfather was also an actor, though he acted just for fun. This might have sparked Doris's interest in performing!
Becoming an Actress: Doris Lloyd's Career Journey
When Doris was 23 years old, she began her acting career on stage. She performed with the Liverpool Repertory Company. Soon after, she appeared in many plays in London's famous West End. Her first movie was a silent British film called The Shadow Between in 1920.
Doris later traveled to the United States to visit her sister. She liked it so much that she decided to stay! For several years, from 1916 to 1925, she acted in Broadway theatre plays in New York City. She even performed in some of the popular Ziegfeld Follies shows. In 1925, she started her film career in the U.S. After that, she mostly worked in movies and television, except for one Broadway play in 1947.

Doris Lloyd appeared in over 150 films during her 42-year career. This was between 1925 and 1967. She played many different kinds of characters. For example, she was Nancy in the 1933 film Oliver Twist. She also played a mysterious Russian spy in Disraeli (1929). Later, she was the quiet housekeeper Mrs. Watchett in The Time Machine (1960).
She was also in some of the well-known Tarzan movies. In 1943, she played a nurse in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. She even lent her voice to one of the roses in Disney's animated movie Alice in Wonderland (1951). Later in her career, she had small parts in two very famous films starring Julie Andrews: Mary Poppins (1964) and The Sound of Music (1965).
Doris Lloyd's Later Years and Passing
Doris Lloyd passed away on May 21, 1968, when she was 76 years old. She died in Santa Barbara, California. Her resting place is at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale.
