What Are Doubles?

Doubles is a unique and delicious snack. It's made of two soft, fried flatbreads called baras. These baras are filled with a spicy chickpea curry called channa. It's often topped with different sauces and relishes. This makes each bite a mix of sweet, spicy, and savory flavors.

Where Did Doubles Come From?

The first doubles were made in 1936. This happened in a place called Fairfield, Princes Town, in Trinidad. A man named Emamool Deen, also known as Mamudeen, and his wife Raheman Rasulan Deen created this snack.

Some people think doubles might have been inspired by a dish from northern India. That dish is called chole bhature. It mixes spicy chickpeas with a fried bread. Mamudeen used to sell the bara (fried dough) and channa (chickpeas) separately. But customers started asking for two baras with their order. They wanted to "double" the bara. That's how this famous snack got its name: "doubles"!

How Are Doubles Made?

Doubles can be made to taste spicy, sweet, or savory. You can choose how you like them! They are often topped with different yummy things. These include spicy pepper sauce, a relish called kuchela, or green mango. Other popular toppings are bandhaniya (also known as chadon beni or culantro), fresh cucumber, coconut, and tangy tamarind chutneys. Each topping adds a special flavor to the doubles.
