Douglas T. Porter (born August 15, 1929 – died June 5, 2024) was a famous American football coach and college sports leader. He spent many years guiding young athletes and teams at different universities. Porter is remembered for his successful career and for being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

About Doug Porter

Doug Porter grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. He loved football from a young age, playing as a quarterback in high school at Father Bertrand High School. He continued playing college football at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans for three seasons. Later, he earned a Master's degree from Indiana University.

After college, Porter served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954, reaching the rank of first lieutenant. This means he was a leader in the army.

When he finished his military service, Porter returned to football. In 1954, he worked as an assistant coach at his old high school, Father Bertrand. He even coached alongside his father, W. P. Porter.

Coaching Career

Porter then went back to Xavier University. There, he coached the backfield (a group of offensive players) and directed intramural sports. Intramural sports are games played within a school, not against other schools.

In 1961, Porter became the athletic director and head football coach at Mississippi Vocational College. This school is now known as Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi. An athletic director is in charge of all the sports programs at a school.

He was the head coach at several universities:

  • Mississippi Valley State University (from 1961 to 1965)
  • Howard University (from 1974 to 1978)
  • Fort Valley State University (from 1979 to 1985, and again from 1987 to 1996)

Between his time at Mississippi Valley State and Howard, he was an assistant coach at Grambling State University. He worked under the legendary coach Eddie Robinson.

Doug Porter had a very successful career as a head coach. His teams won a total of 155 games, lost 110, and tied 5. This is a great record for a college football coach!

Hall of Fame

Because of his amazing career and impact on college football, Doug Porter was honored in 2008. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. This is a special place that celebrates the greatest players and coaches in college football history.

Doug Porter passed away in Grambling, Louisiana, on June 5, 2024, at the age of 94. He left behind a legacy of leadership and success in college sports.
