Douglas McAuthur McCain was an American who died in Syria in August 2014. He was fighting for a group called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). McCain was born in 1981 and grew up in the United States.
He is known as one of the first U.S. citizens to die while fighting for ISIL. At the time, many other Americans were also fighting in Syria for similar groups. Another American, Moner Mohammad Abu-Salha, was actually the first U.S. citizen killed in the Syrian Civil War in May 2014.
Douglas McCain went to the same high school as Troy Kastigar. Troy also died as an Islamic fighter in Somalia in 2009. It is thought that Douglas and Troy might have even lived together for a time.

Douglas McCain was born in Chicago, Illinois. He later moved to Minnesota and then to California. He went to Robbinsdale Cooper High School from 1997 to 1999. He then transferred to Robbinsdale Armstrong High School but did not finish.
McCain loved playing basketball. He was a big fan of the Chicago Bulls basketball team. He also dreamed of becoming a rapper.
Life Changes and Travel
In 2004, Douglas McCain converted to Islam. This means he chose to follow the Islamic faith. He later traveled to Europe. By 2013, he was back in San Diego.
Reports say he worked at a mosque, which is a Muslim place of worship. Other reports suggest he worked at a Somali restaurant and often visited a mosque.

A former classmate said that Douglas was happy to talk about Islam. He was also respectful of what other people believed. The classmate did not think he had extreme views.
Douglas was active on social media. He used the name "Duale Khalid" on Twitter. On Facebook, he was known as "Duale ThaslaveofAllah."
His Death in Syria
Douglas McCain was killed in fighting in Syria. This happened around August 23 or 24, 2014. He was fighting against a group called the Free Syrian Army.
When his body was found, he had $800 in cash. He also had his U.S. passport with him.
