The Dr. Jefferson A. Walters House is a really old and important house in downtown Dayton, Ohio, United States. It was built way back in 1832. This house was once home to two very important people from Dayton's early days. Because of its history and unique style, it's now known as a historic site.
Who Was Dr. Jefferson Walters?
Jefferson Walters was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Ohio in 1830 when he was 20 years old. He studied medicine in Worthington.
After his studies, he worked as a doctor for three years in Perry County. Then, in 1837, he moved to Dayton. Dr. Walters became a very successful pharmacist in the city. He ran a popular drugstore from 1841 until 1866. He had to stop working after he was injured in a road accident. Even though he got better, he decided not to go back to medicine. Instead, he spent his retirement studying philosophy and old things.
What Does the House Look Like?
When it was finished in 1832, the Walters House was special. It was the first house in Dayton made of brick with a stone front. It was built for Thomas Clegg, who owned several factories. He was one of Dayton's most important early business owners.
The house has a strong foundation made of limestone. Its walls are brick, and it has an asphalt roof. You can also see parts made of wood and more limestone. The house has three stories. The main door is on the first floor. It has a frame made of a post and lintel design. There is one window on each side of the door. The second and third floors each have three windows.
The house looks a bit different today because it was changed in 1857. Now, it mixes the Italianate style with parts of other Renaissance Revival styles. This mix makes it very unique!
A Historic Landmark
In 1974, the Dr. Jefferson A. Walters House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history. The house earned its spot for two main reasons. First, its unique architecture is very valuable. Second, it was home to Dr. Jefferson Walters, who was a very important person in Dayton's past.
This house is one of several historic places on First Street. There are seven National Register-listed properties in just a four-block area! Other nearby historic spots include the First Lutheran Church, the Biltmore Hotel, and the Victoria Theatre. You can also find the James Brooks House, Antioch Temple, and the Dayton Memorial Hall close by.
