The Dr. William W. Mayo House is a historic home located at 118 North Main Street in Le Sueur, Minnesota. It was built in 1859 by Dr. William Worrall Mayo and his brother, James. Dr. Mayo was a very important doctor who helped many people. This house is special because it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a place worth protecting for its history.

Who Was Dr. William W. Mayo?
Dr. William W. Mayo came to the United States from England in 1846. He became a doctor and settled in Le Sueur, Minnesota. His older son, William James Mayo, who later became a famous doctor too, was born in this house in 1861.
Dr. Mayo's Early Work
Dr. Mayo helped pioneers and their families during the Dakota War of 1862. This was a conflict between the Dakota people and settlers in Minnesota. Later, he moved to Rochester, Minnesota. There, he helped choose soldiers for the army during the American Civil War.
Founding the Mayo Clinic
Dr. William W. Mayo and his two sons, William and Charles, were all doctors. They worked together to open Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester in 1889. This happened after a big tornado hit Rochester in 1883. The hospital started with 27 beds. Later, the Mayo family founded the famous Mayo Clinic, which is known worldwide for its medical care.
A Home with History
After the Mayo family, the house was owned by Charlotte Wright Bradley. She gave the home to her daughter, Elizabeth, and her new husband, Carson Nesbit Cosgrove, in 1874.
The Green Giant Connection
Carson Nesbit Cosgrove became a very important person in the food industry. In 1903, he helped start the Minnesota Valley Canning Company. This company later became known as Green Giant. Green Giant became famous for canning vegetables from the Minnesota River valley. Cosgrove's son, Edward, and grandson, Robert, were both born in this house. They also led the Green Giant company for many years. Eventually, the company became part of General Mills.
Visiting the Mayo House Today
The Dr. William W. Mayo House is now a state historic site. It is managed by the Ney Nature Center, working with the Minnesota Historical Society. The house has been carefully restored. It looks just like it did in 1860, with furniture and items from that time.
Mayoview History Center
There is also a separate building called the Mayoview History Center. This center has exhibits that tell the story of the Mayo family. You can learn about how they started St. Mary's Hospital and the world-famous Mayo Clinic. It's a great place to learn about medical history and the Mayo family's impact.
