The Dr. William W. Mayo House is a historic home in Le Sueur, Minnesota. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was built in 1859 by Dr. William Worrall Mayo and his brother, James Mayo.
Dr. Mayo came to the United States from England in 1846. He became a doctor and helped many people. His older son, William James Mayo, was born in this house in 1861. Dr. Mayo helped pioneers and their families during the Dakota War of 1862. He later moved to Rochester, Minnesota. There, he helped with medical checks for soldiers during the Civil War.
After the war, Dr. Mayo and his sons, William and Charles, became famous doctors. They opened Saint Marys Hospital in 1889. This happened after a big tornado hit Rochester in 1883. Later, they started the famous Mayo Clinic.
History of the Mayo House
The Mayo House has a rich history beyond the Mayo family. After the Mayos, Charlotte Wright Bradley owned the home. She gave the house to her daughter, Elizabeth, and her new husband, Carson Nesbit Cosgrove, in 1874.
The Green Giant Connection
Carson Nesbit Cosgrove was an important person in the history of food canning. In 1903, he led the first meeting of the Minnesota Valley Canning Company. This company later became the well-known Green Giant company. Cosgrove helped make canning a big business in the Minnesota River valley.
His son, Edward, and grandson, Robert, were also born in this house. They both later became leaders of the Green Giant company. Eventually, a larger company called General Mills bought Green Giant.
Visiting the Historic Site
Today, the Mayo House is a state historic site. It is also known as the W. W. Mayo House. The Ney Nature Center and the Minnesota Historical Society help manage it.
The house has been carefully restored. It looks just like it did in 1860. This lets visitors see what life was like back then. There is also a separate building called the Mayoview History Center. It has exhibits about the Mayo family. You can learn about St. Mary's Hospital and the Mayo Clinic there too.
