Discovering the Hospital's Past
The Saint Marys Hospital first opened in 1889. It was started by a group of Franciscan nuns, the Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, Minnesota. Their leader was Mother Alfred Moes. Several buildings on the Saint Marys Campus are named after Mother Alfred and other Sisters. These Sisters were important leaders at the hospital over the years. The Francis Building honors all the Franciscan Sisters who have worked there.
The hospital's name was originally spelled "Saint Mary's Hospital." You can still see this old spelling carved in stone above the original front door.
