The Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester is a very large hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. It has over 2,000 beds for patients. This hospital is a special kind of place called a teaching hospital. This means doctors learn and teach there.
The hospital has two main parts: the Saint Marys Campus and the Methodist Campus. It is a big part of the famous Mayo Clinic. In 2019–20, it was even ranked as the best hospital in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report!

History of the Hospital
Saint Marys Hospital started in 1889. It was founded by a group of Franciscan Sisters. These Sisters were a religious community in Rochester, Minnesota. They were led by Mother Alfred Moes.
Several buildings at the hospital are named after Mother Alfred and other Sisters. These Sisters helped run the hospital over the years. This shows how important the Sisters were to the hospital's history.
The hospital's name used to be spelled with an apostrophe: "Saint Mary's Hospital". You can still see this spelling above the old front entrance. But now, the apostrophe is usually left out.
In January 2014, the Saint Marys and Rochester Methodist hospitals joined together. They became one hospital called Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester.
Saint Marys Campus
The Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester, Saint Marys Campus is very large. It has 1,265 beds and 64 operating rooms. In 2008, about 63,000 patients were admitted here. Also, 28,000 surgeries took place at the hospital.
This campus has the nation's largest intensive care unit (ICU). It has about 200 ICU beds. It also has 200 "step-down" ICU beds. These are for patients who are getting better but still need close care.
The hospital is a top-level Level I trauma center. This means it can handle the most serious injuries. It is also a stroke center. It helps people who have had a stroke.
The Saint Marys Campus has a large emergency department. It has more than 76 beds. About 80,000 patients visit this emergency department each year. It helps people from Rochester and nearby areas. It also gets patients from other states like Iowa and Wisconsin. These patients often arrive by the Mayo One medical helicopter.
Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital
The Saint Marys Campus is home to the Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital. This hospital has 148 beds. It provides special care for babies, children, and young adults up to age 21. Doctors from over 40 different medical areas work here.
The new children's hospital opened in 1996. It cost $13 million to build. It was named after Eugenio Litta. He was a 14-year-old boy who sadly passed away. This hospital is ranked among the best in the country for several children's health areas.
Methodist Campus
The Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester, Methodist Campus has 794 beds. It also has 51 operating rooms. This campus includes the Richard O. Jacobson Building. This building is home to a special cancer treatment called proton beam therapy.
