History of Dragoon
Dragoon has an interesting history, especially during World War II.
Japanese Diplomats in Dragoon
During World War II, the United States held many Japanese officials and diplomats. These were people who worked for the Japanese government in the U.S. before the war. Many were preparing to return to Japan as part of a diplomatic exchange.
In 1942, a group of 23 Japanese diplomats were held in Dragoon, Arizona. These individuals had previously worked at the Japanese consulate in Hawaii. They were kept in Dragoon before being moved to New York City.
While in Dragoon and during their journey to New York, these diplomats were not allowed to see any newspapers or other media. This was to prevent them from learning certain information during wartime. On June 13, 1942, they boarded a ship called the S.S. Gripsholm. This ship was used for exchanging diplomats and civilians between warring countries.
