History of Dronten
Plans for the Dronten area started in the early 1950s. The main town of Dronten was first planned in 1958.
The town began to be built in 1960. There was a lot of discussion about whether Dronten should be a small town or a bigger city. At first, they thought it would have 15,000 people. Later, they expected it to grow to 30,000 people.
The first plans for the municipality included ten smaller villages around the main town. But this number was reduced. This was because more people had cars, and they learned from building a similar area called Noordoostpolder. In the end, it was decided there would be two smaller villages, Biddinghuizen and Swifterbant, and one larger town, Dronten.
Dronten officially became a municipality on January 1, 1972.
In 1995, Dronten hosted a very large event called the 18th World Scout Jamboree in Biddinghuizen. Nearly 29,000 Scouts and staff from 166 countries came together for this event.
