Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Drumbo round tower (Irish: Cloigtheach Druim Bó) is an old, partly broken Irish round tower. You can find it in Drumbo, County Down, in Northern Ireland. These towers were special buildings from long ago in Ireland.

What is the Drumbo Round Tower Like?

This ancient tower stands about 10.7 meters tall. That's roughly the height of a three-story building! It is 5 meters wide on the outside. The walls are about 1.2 meters thick. The entrance door faces east and is 1.5 meters above the ground. It is about 1.68 meters high and 0.56 meters wide.

Inside the tower, you can see holes in the walls. These holes show where wooden floors used to be. There were six levels inside, including a basement.

Today, the tower is located on the grounds of a local Presbyterian church. Long ago, this tower was part of a medieval church and monastery. You can still see the old foundations of these buildings in the graveyard nearby.

History of the Drumbo Tower

The Drumbo round tower was built a very long time ago, around the early medieval period. It is now a protected historic monument. Sadly, the tower was badly damaged in 1130. This happened when a person named Connor, son of Artgal McLochlin, attacked the site.

The place where the Drumbo round tower and monastery stand is one of the oldest religious sites in Ireland. In an old book called the Book of Armagh, the name Drumbo means "the long hill of the cow." This is why the old church was also known as Collum Bovis.

The round tower was first built here because it had amazing views. From the tower, people could see all over the Lagan Valley. Back then, these views were very important. They helped people spot incoming Viking raids from far away.
