The red whip snake (Dryophiops rubescens) is a type of snake found in Southeast Asia. It belongs to the colubrid family of snakes, which is a very large group of snakes found all over the world. This snake is known for its slender body and its reddish color.

About the Red Whip Snake

The red whip snake, originally named Dipsas rubescens, is the main example for its group, called a genus, named Dryophiops. This Dryophiops group only has one other known snake species, which is the Dryophiops philippina from the Philippines.

The Dryophiops genus is part of a larger group of snakes called the vine snake subfamily Ahaetuliinae. The red whip snake's closest relatives in this group are the snakes from the Ahaetulla and Proahaetulla genera.

Where Does It Live?

The red whip snake lives in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. It is an arboreal snake, which means it spends most of its life in trees. You can find it in the forests of these countries.

What Does It Look Like?

Snakes in the Dryophiops genus, including the red whip snake, have a special body shape. They are long and thin, almost flat from side to side. They also have a long, pointed snout and big eyes. Their eyes have horizontal pupils, which help them see very well. This special vision, called binocular vision, helps them judge distances, which is super useful for moving through trees.
