Dubina is a small community in Fayette County, Texas, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Even though only about 44 people live there today, Dubina was once a busy place. It holds a special spot in history as the very first settlement in Texas founded by people from Czechia (which used to be called Bohemia). This happened way back in 1856.

Dubina is located about 90 miles west of Houston and 104 miles east of San Antonio. Since 2003, most of the community has been recognized as the Dubina Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical area worth protecting.

How Dubina Got Its Name

The name "Dubina" means "oak grove" in the Czech language. This name comes from a cool story about the first settlers.

The Settlers' Journey

The story says that the first Czech settlers were traveling, looking for the perfect place to build their new homes. One day, it started to rain heavily.

Finding Shelter

They found shelter under a huge oak tree. As they rested, they looked around and realized how comfortable and welcoming the spot felt.

A New Home

Because of this experience, they decided to settle right there. They named their new community Dubina, which was a perfect fit for the place with the big oak tree.

Dubina's History

After the American Civil War, many more Czech immigrants came to Texas. Dubina became an important place for them to settle and start new lives.

Neighboring Communities

Nearby, another town called Hackberry was settled by German immigrants. This shows how different groups of people came to Texas and built their own communities.

Famous Buildings

Dubina is home to some really old and interesting buildings. The most famous one is the Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.

The Painted Church

This church is known as one of Texas's "painted churches." Inside, it has beautiful, colorful paintings that make it a unique and special place to visit.
