A Look Back: Duchesne's History
Duchesne Academy first opened its doors in Omaha in 1881. The school is named after a very special person, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne. She was one of the first women to join the Society of the Sacred Heart.
Who Was St. Rose Philippine Duchesne?
St. Rose Philippine Duchesne came to the United States from France in the early 1800s. She started the very first Sacred Heart school in St. Charles, Missouri. Duchesne Academy in Omaha is one of 24 schools in the Sacred Heart Network across the United States.
Students and Successes
Duchesne Academy usually has about 85 students in each grade, making the total number of students around 340. The school is known for its strong academic programs.
One of their big achievements is their mock trial team. This team has become very well-known across the country. In 2015, the Duchesne mock trial team won the national championship! This big competition was held in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Special School Traditions
Duchesne Academy celebrates many unique traditions that are shared by all Sacred Heart schools. Each grade level has its own special event during the school year.
Freshman and Sophomore Celebrations
- Freshmen: The youngest students have a Teacher Recognition Ceremony. This is a time when they honor and thank their teachers.
- Sophomores: These students celebrate "Mater." During this event, they recognize women who are great role models, much like the Virgin Mary.
Junior and Senior Events
- Ring Ceremony: The senior class gives class rings to the juniors. This is a symbolic moment where leadership of the school is passed down to the next senior class.
- Graduation: In May, the seniors celebrate their graduation. This important ceremony takes place at Saint Cecilia's Cathedral.
End-of-Year Awards
At the end of the school year, Duchesne holds two special award days:
- Prize Day: This day celebrates students who have achieved excellent grades and shown strong leadership.
- Honors Day: On this day, students are recognized for their achievements in extracurricular activities, sports, and other non-academic areas.
