Duck is a small town located in Dare County, North Carolina, in the United States. It's part of the beautiful Outer Banks, a chain of islands off the coast. In 2020, about 746 people lived there. Duck is the newest town in the Outer Banks, officially becoming a town on May 1, 2002. It's a popular spot for visitors who enjoy outdoor activities, fun events, watersports, and good food.

Exploring Duck's Location
Duck is found on the northern part of the Outer Banks. It has the Atlantic Ocean on its east side and Currituck Sound to its west. The town covers about 3.7 square miles (9.6 square kilometers). A little over half of this area is land, and the rest is water.
This area was once part of Currituck County to the north. But in the early 1900s, it became part of Dare County. The name "Duck" comes from the many ducks and other waterfowl that live in the area.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 742 people living in Duck. These people made up 288 households, with 202 of them being families.

Duck Town Park

A long boardwalk stretches about 0.78 miles (1.26 kilometers) along Currituck Sound. You can get to it from the town park or from the main shopping area. It's a perfect spot for a walk or to enjoy the water views. Duck's beach has even been called one of the "Top 15 Family-Friendly Beaches in America."
Events and Festivals
Every October, Duck hosts its yearly Jazz Festival, which is quite famous. During the summer, the town has more than 60 free events and programs. These include:

How Duck's Government Works

Becoming a Town
Duck officially became a town on May 1, 2002. The idea to make Duck an official town started in 2001. A bill was introduced in the House and then passed by the Senate. On November 6, 2001, the people living in Duck voted to become an incorporated town. This made Duck the sixth town in Dare County.
Historic Lifesaving Station
The Caffeys Inlet Lifesaving Station is an important historical building near Duck. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Lifesaving stations were places where brave people would help rescue sailors and ships in trouble along the coast.
Awards for Duck
Duck has received special recognition! It was named one of the "Best Coastal Small Towns" by USA Today and 10Best.
Duck's Climate
Duck, North Carolina, is located in a mild climate zone. This means it usually doesn't get too cold in the winter. It's the northernmost place on the East Coast of the United States that has this type of climate.
