Dudley North (born 1684 – died 1730) lived at Glemham Hall in Little Glemham, Suffolk. He was a British landowner and a politician from the Tory party. He was a member of the British House of Commons from 1710 to 1730. He was also a cousin of Lord North, who was the British Prime Minister during the American War of Independence.
Biography of Dudley North
Dudley North was the only son of Sir Dudley North and Anne Cann. His mother was the daughter of Sir Robert Cann, 1st Baronet.
His family, the, was well-known. His grandmother, Anne Montagu, was from Boughton House. His grandfather was Baron Dudley North, 4th Baron North of Kirtling Tower. Dudley's father was a famous merchant, economist, and politician. He bought the Glemham estate shortly before he passed away in 1691.
Dudley North was taught at home in Kensington. He later went to St. John’s College, Cambridge in 1701. Before 1708, he married Katherine Yale (who died in 1715). She brought a large sum of money, £20,000, to the marriage. Katherine was the daughter of Elihu Yale, who gave his name to Yale University. Katherine's sister married Lord James Cavendish.
In 1708, Dudley North tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for Thetford. He ran with Sir Thomas Hanmer, 4th Baronet, who was a relative, but he did not win. In 1710, he became a local councilman for Dunwich.
At the 1710 British general election, he was elected as a Tory MP for Thetford without anyone running against him. He was seen as one of the "worthy patriots" who helped show the mistakes of the previous government. In March 1711, he joined a group to help write a special law about Great Yarmouth harbour. He also helped write a law to stop people from illegally moving wool. In 1712, he became an alderman in Dunwich. He was also the bailiff (a local official) from 1713 to 1714. He was elected for Thetford again in the 1713 British general election, with support from Hanmer.
Dudley North was elected for Thetford again in 1715. From then on, he often voted against the ruling government. In the 1722 British general election, he changed to the Orford area and was elected with the support of the Price Devereux family. He was elected for Orford again in 1727. Dudley North passed away on February 4, 1730.
Dudley North's Family
Lord North, who was the Prime Minister of Great Britain during the American War of Independence, was Dudley North's first cousin. Lord North was a descendant of Dudley's uncle, Francis North, 1st Baron Guilford, who lived at Wroxton Abbey.
Another of Dudley's uncles was Roger North. He was a lawyer for the Duke of York and for Queen Mary of Modena. Dudley's cousin was Lt. Gen. William North, 6th Baron North, who served under Prince John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough of Blenheim Palace.
Dudley North's Children
Dudley North had two sons and three daughters. One son and one daughter passed away before him. His daughter, Anne North Yale, married Nicholas Herbert. Nicholas was the son of Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke of Wilton House and Margaret Sawyer.
Margaret's father, Sir Robert Sawyer, built and owned Highclere Castle. When he died, the castle went to Thomas and Margaret. After Margaret's death, it passed to Nicholas's brother, Robert Sawyer Herbert (who died in 1769).
One of Dudley's sons, William Dudley North Yale, also married into the Herbert family. He married Lady Barbara Herbert, who was the daughter of Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke and his second wife, Barbara Herbert, Countess of Pembroke. The children were raised at Highclere Castle by Reverend Isaac Milles.
The children of Dudley North and Katherine Yale were cousins of Francis North, 1st Earl of Guilford, and his son, Lord North.
