History of Duey Alto

After a war called the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This was part of a peace agreement known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.

In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Duey Alto and a nearby community called Rosario Peñón had a combined population of 1,100 people.
