A Historic Border River
For a very long time, the River Duff was an important natural border. It helped mark the old boundary between two ancient parts of Ireland: Ulster and Connacht. Imagine a river acting like a fence between two big areas!
Fun on the Water
The Duff River is a great spot for water sports, especially for beginners.
White-Water Rafting and Kayaking
If you're into white-water rafting or kayaking, the River Duff offers some exciting challenges. There's about 500 metres (that's half a kilometre!) of class 2/3 rapids. This means the water moves pretty fast, with some waves and small drops, but it's still good for people learning. At the very end of this section, there's a three-metre (10 feet) drop, which is like a mini waterfall!
Quick Water Level Changes
Because the River Duff is a short river that flows down from mountains like the Dartry Mountains and Ben Bulben, its water levels can change super fast. If there's a lot of heavy rain, the river can swell up quickly. This makes it exciting but also means you need to be aware of the conditions.
Fishing for Salmon
The River Duff is also a popular place for salmon fishing. Many people enjoy trying to catch salmon here.
Fishing Season Details
The best time to fish for salmon on the River Duff is during the official fishing season. This season runs from February 1st to September 30th each year. The most popular spots for fishing are in the lower three and a half miles of the river.
