The Dartry Mountains (Irish: Sléibhte Dhartraí) are a beautiful mountain range in the northwest of Ireland. You can find them mostly in the northern parts of Sligo and Leitrim. These mountains are nestled between three lakes: Lough Melvin, Lough Gill, and Lough MacNean. The tallest peak in the Dartry Mountains is Truskmore, which stands at 647 meters (2,123 feet) high. Other well-known mountains here include Benbulbin (526 meters or 1,726 feet), Benwiskin (514 meters or 1,686 feet), and Tievebaun (611 meters or 2,005 feet).
What's in a Name?
The Dartry Mountains get their name from an old Irish area called túath of Dartraighe. This area was once part of the ancient kingdom of Bréifne. The Dartry Mountains are also very close to the Breifne Mountains, which are located to the southeast.
How Were They Formed?
The Dartry Mountains are a large, flat-topped area made mostly of limestone. Over many years, glaciation (when huge sheets of ice moved across the land) carved out the unique and striking shapes you see today. This ice also created deep valleys within the range.
Famous Valleys
The Dartry Mountains include several beautiful valleys. These include the valleys of Glencar, Glenade, and Gleniff. Each valley offers amazing views and unique landscapes.
