Duffel is a small town, also called a municipality, in Belgium. It's located in the province of Antwerp.
As of January 1, 2020, about 17,664 people live in Duffel. The town covers an area of about 22.71 square kilometers. This means it has about 778 people living in each square kilometer.
Duffel is famous for a special type of thick wool cloth. This cloth has been made here since the 11th century. It was used for blankets, warm coats, and bags. The name "Duffel" became well-known during and after World War II. This was because of a coat made from this cloth, which had special toggle-and-loop fasteners and a roomy hood.
The name Duffel comes from old words meaning "water." This makes sense because the town is near water. In 1836, a train station opened in Duffel. It was on the railway line between Brussels and Antwerp.
Duffel Cloth: A Famous Fabric
The town of Duffel gives its name to a special kind of heavy woolen cloth. This fabric was often used to make blankets and warm overcoats, especially for soldiers. It was also used for a type of bag called a duffel bag.
In the Middle Ages, making cloth was a very important industry in this region. The cloth made in Duffel was a thicker version of a fabric called Flemish laken. In the 1500s, people from Flanders moved to England and took their cloth-making skills with them. Because the cloth from Duffel was so well-known, a type of overcoat made from it in England was named the Duffel coat.
