Where is Dulmial?
Dulmial is a town located in Pakistan. It is about 150 kilometers south of Islamabad, the capital city. You can find it on the road that goes from Choa Saidan Shah to Kallar Kahar. It is also close to the beautiful Katas Raj Temples, which are ancient Hindu monuments.
Dulmial's Special History
Dulmial is known as the "village with the gun." It is also called the "Home Town of Gunners." This is because, for about 800 years, the village has sent many of its people to join the army.
Dulmial's Role in World Wars
During World War I, Dulmial village sent 460 soldiers to fight for the British forces. This was the largest number of soldiers from any single village in South Asia. Sadly, nine of these brave soldiers died.
Later, in World War II, Dulmial sent even more soldiers. A total of 732 people from the village joined the army during that war.
The Famous Cannon
To honor the 460 soldiers who fought in World War I, a special memorial stone was built. It stands at a primary school in the village.
In 1925, the British government gave Dulmial a cannon as a special award. This was to thank the village for its huge contributions in World War I. The people of Dulmial chose the cannon as their award. It was brought from Jhelum by train and then by a cart pulled by oxen. The cannon was placed at the entrance of the village with a special plaque. This is why Dulmial is now known across Pakistan as "the village with the gun."
After Pakistan's Creation
Before Pakistan became a separate country, Dulmial was mostly a Muslim village. After the creation of Pakistan, it became part of the new nation.
Since Pakistan was formed, many people from Dulmial have continued to serve in the Pakistan Army. Five lieutenant-generals and 23 brigadiers, along with many other officers, have come from this village.
