History of Dunbar

Dunbar was officially started in 1888. This was a time when the logging industry was very busy in the northern woods of Wisconsin. Trees were cut down and used for wood products.

Back then, the railroad was super important. It was the main way to move huge logs from Dunbar to places further south in Wisconsin and even to Illinois.

The town was likely named after Warren Dunbar. He was an engineer who worked for the railroad from 1840 to 1918.

There's also a fun story about how the town got its name. Before it was an official town, there was a restaurant there. A cook with the last name Dunbar worked at this restaurant. When the railroad trains stopped in the area, they would bring food and supplies for the restaurant. The railroad workers would say they were bringing things "to Dunbar," meaning the cook. So, when the town was finally created, it was named after the cook's last name!
