What is Dura Den?

Dura Den is like a mini-canyon. It's a deep, narrow cut in the land. This special place is located in northeastern Fife, Scotland. It sits between two villages, Kemback and Pitscottie. The Ceres Burn stream runs through the den. Long ago, this stream was very important. It powered big machines in mills that made jute. Jute is a strong plant fiber used to make things like ropes and bags.

Amazing Fossils

In the 1850s, something exciting happened in Dura Den. A minister named John Anderson was also a geologist. Geologists study rocks and the Earth. He found many amazing fossils here. These fossils were from ancient fish. They were preserved in the sandstone rocks. Finding so many fish fossils in one place was a big discovery! It helped scientists learn more about Earth's past.

Dura Den Wood

Dura Den also has a lovely forest. It's called Dura Den Wood. This wood covers an area of about 1.7 hectares. That's roughly the size of two football fields! The woods are home to different kinds of trees. You can find ash, oak, and hazel trees growing there. It's a great place for nature lovers.
