Duranillin is a small town located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. It is about 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Darkan. The town is near where the Arthur River and Beaufort River meet.

A Look at Duranillin's Past

The name Duranillin comes from the Aboriginal people. A surveyor first wrote down the name in 1877. However, no one knows what the name means today.

The town officially started in 1916. This was when the Wagin to Bowelling railway line was built. The town became official in 1918. The Duranillin railway bridge crosses the Arthur River. This bridge was built for the railway line. It is now a special heritage site.

The first building in Duranillin was a store. Lewis Hibble built it. In the 1920s, more families came to settle here. The railway was the main job provider until 1968. A big timber mill also operated in the town. It was run by the Hughes family. This mill gave jobs to several families.

One of the best places near Duranillin is Lake Towerrinning. This lake is south of the town. It is a semi-freshwater lake. It covers a large area of about 256 hectares (633 acres).
